Despite a Galaxy poll in 2009 that showed over 60% of Australians support same-sex marriage, it continues to be opposed by both major parties.

The issue is dividing voters and suggests many votes will swing towards the Greens.

A week before the election, Tony Hicky, Greens candidate for the seat of Sydney, marched up Oxford St with the Equal Love Rally to campaign for same-sex marriage.

Following the route of the original Mardi Gras and finishing at Taylor Square, Hicky said he wants people to have the choice of a marriage union.

“Julia Gillard doesn’t want to get married, or not yet at least, and that’s great but I don’t have that choice and it’s wrong.”

But Hicky says he’s still positive about there being a shift in policy after this weekends election.

“Hopefully with the Greens in the balance of power, and some new people in Government replacing those people that were in there before, the major parties might like to revise their policies and fall in line with the rest of the Australian public.”
